Philippine Metal Manufacturer Cuts Sourcing Costs 30% with One-Stop Stainless and Galvanized Steel Supply

Project Background
A metal manufacturing enterprise based in the Philippines, supplying fabricated parts to the local construction, food-processing equipment and appliance industries, approached us with a sourcing problem that had been building for two years. The company was buying stainless steel sheet, stainless steel plate, galvanized steel coil and galvanized square tube from four different traders, each with its own lead time, tolerance standard and documentation quality. Production planning had become a weekly firefight.
Their purchasing team needed a single supplier who could ship multiple steel grades in one consolidated order, hold thickness tolerance on 2B finish sheet, and provide mill test certificates that would clear Philippine customs and satisfy their own end customers.
The Challenge
- Fragmented supply chain: four suppliers, four sets of paperwork, four delivery schedules to chase every month.
- Inconsistent thickness tolerance: 304 2B sheet arriving at 0.48 mm against a 0.50 mm nominal, causing rejections at the press shop.
- Mixed loading inefficiency: partial containers from separate traders, with freight cost per ton 18–22% higher than a consolidated load.
- Documentation gaps: certificates without heat numbers, delaying customs release and customer audits.
The Solution: One Order, Five Product Families
We built a single purchase order covering the five materials their production floor consumes, all produced to ASTM and JIS requirements and loaded into one 40HQ container with a stuffing plan designed around their unloading sequence.
| Material | Grade | Size Range | Standard | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel sheet (2B) | 304 | 0.5–3.0 mm × 1219 × 2438 mm | ASTM A240 | Appliance panels, kitchen equipment |
| Stainless steel plate | 316L | 3–20 mm × 1500 × 6000 mm | ASTM A240 | Food-processing tanks, structural brackets |
| Galvanized steel coil | DX51D + Z120 | 0.4–1.2 mm × 1000 / 1219 mm | ASTM A653 | Roll-formed profiles, ducting |
| Galvanized square tube | Q235 / SS400 | 20×20–100×100 mm, wall 1.0–2.0 mm | ASTM A500 | Frame structures, racking |
| Stainless welded pipe | 304 | Ø19–114 mm, wall 1.0–3.0 mm | ASTM A312 | Handrails, sanitary lines |
Quality Control and Documentation
Every heat is traced from slab to finished coil or tube. Before shipment we provide:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 with heat number, chemical composition and mechanical properties
- Thickness and width inspection report, measured at three points across the coil width
- Third-party inspection (SGS or BV) on request, at the buyer's nominated port
- Positive material identification (PMI) for 316L heats to confirm molybdenum content
Sheet thickness is controlled to ±0.02 mm on 2B finish, which removed the press-shop rejection issue entirely. Coils are eye-to-sky, edge-protected, strapped on wooden pallets and lashed in the container with a loading plan that mirrors the customer's production sequence — the grade they run first sits nearest the door.
Results After Twelve Months
- One PO instead of four: purchasing administration time on steel sourcing dropped by roughly 30%.
- Freight cost down 18–22% per ton through consolidated 40HQ loading.
- Lead time stabilised at 25–30 days from order confirmation to Manila port arrival.
- Zero thickness-related rejections across four consecutive shipments.
- Quarterly repeat orders, now covering 304, 316L, galvanized coil and square tube on a rolling forecast.
Customer Feedback
“What changed for us was not the price — it was not having to call four people to find out where four containers are. One schedule, one set of certificates, and the thickness is what the certificate says it is.”

Why This Matters for Philippine Buyers
Philippine fabricators typically import through traders who consolidate from multiple mills, which multiplies documentation risk and hides tolerance responsibility. Buying multiple steel families directly from one mill-backed supplier keeps the certificate chain intact, allows a single container stuffing plan, and gives the buyer one party to hold accountable when a heat does not match specification.
If your production uses more than one steel family — stainless sheet, plate, galvanized coil, square tube or welded pipe — we can quote them as a single consolidated order with one certificate package and one delivery schedule.
